Spelling Bee Champion: Snigdha Nandipati spells out “guetapens” (Video)

Snigdha Nandipati spells out “guetapens” correctly, a French-derived word that means ambush, trap or snare. Snigdha beats eight other 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee finalists and declared as the National Spelling Bee Champion, according to reports of several international news sites on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

The 14-years-old Snigdha Nandipati, 8th grader of Francis Parker School from San Diego, California wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee after she spells out the word “guatapens” correctly during the finals in Oxon Hill, Md. Snigdha receives a cash prize more than $40,000 in cash, trophy, scholarship and other prizes.

Snigdha said in an interview after the completion, “I knew it. I’d seen it before,” “I just wanted to ask everything I could before I started spelling.”

Snigdha dreams to become a psychiatrist or a neurosurgeon someday.

Hundreds of children from different U.S. states, including Snigdha with a total of 278 contestants. A Six-year-old speller also joins this year’s competition, Lori Anne Madison, from Woodbridge, Virginia, and she is the youngest speller on record with the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
